Fully-funded four-year PhD studentship at Loughborough University: Sleep in a warming world

Good quality sleep is important to our productivity, well-being and health. As the earth warms, elevated night-time temperatures threaten our ability to sleep. The problem is exacerbated in cities where the urban heat island further elevates temperatures, and where noise, pollution and security concerns reduce our willingness to open windows for ventilation.

This project will explore existing data sets to understand the incidence of elevated night-time temperatures and how conventional overheating metrics define the incidence of overheating. Then, and depending on this analysis, sleep quality during the summer in UK homes will be recorded and new criteria derived which more reliably indicate the actual incidence of reported sleep deprivation.
