Fully-funded four-year PhD studentship at Loughborough University in “Low Energy Personal Cooling Systems for Future Climate Resilience”

The UK’s housing stock needs to be prepared for increased incidences of warm spells and heatwaves. It is projected that by 2050, thermal comfort cannot be achieved during summers by merely using passive measures and mechanical cooling will be required.

Low Energy Personal Cooling Systems (PCS) is a rapidly developing area with new systems emerging. PCS aim at cooling only the occupied micro-environment of a space and could potentially improve occupants’ thermal comfort and reduce the cooling energy demand.

This PhD aims to evaluate the performance of domestic PCS under the current and future UK climate and provide credible and unbiased evidence about thermal comfort and energy saving benefits of such systems. The research will use Loughborough University’s environmental chambers, thermal manikins, full scale test houses with synthetic occupancy and the latest modelling software.
