Simulating and Optimising the Performance of the Building Stock

Shyam graduated from UCL in 2018 with a Physics MSci. Throughout his degree, he had a strong interest in both thermodynamics and the need to tackle climate change. The ERBE CDT was a perfect opportunity to combine these two interests. With experience in programming, he will be working on simulating and optimising the performance of the building stock.

The UK’s building stock accounts for a significant proportion of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions, and it is being replaced at a slow rate. The importance thus falls on improving the energy efficiency of the current stock to meet future national emission targets. This is achievable via energy retrofitting of the stock, however the decision making process is subject to many conflicting criteria. Such a problem can be approached via multi-objective optimisation, however few studies have attempted this at the stock level. This study aims to address this gap in the literature by developing a method to optimise the retrofit of the building stock with respect to a number of objectives.
