Gabriela graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from Royal Holloway, University of London. She then joined BAE Systems as a Software Engineer, where she spent three years developing software solutions for naval ships, gaining experience in C#, Java, SQL, and data management. In 2023, she joined the ERBE CDT at Loughborough University to apply her expertise in mathematics, data, and computing to the energy and built environment sector. Her current research bridges artificial intelligence with building energy systems, with a focus on improving the sustainability and resilience of HVAC operations.
An Explainable Machine Learning Framework for HVAC Systems: Integrating Fault Detection, Diagnosis, and Resilient Control

Gabriela’s research explores how artificial intelligence can make buildings smarter, more efficient, and easier to manage. She is developing a framework that uses machine learning to spot unusual behaviour in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, explain what has gone wrong in transparent ways, and suggest adjustments to keep the building running smoothly. Her work focuses on improving control during fault or anomalous conditions, times when buildings are most likely to waste energy or compromise comfort. Using the West Park Teaching Hub at Loughborough University as a case study, the project aims to create tools that facility managers can trust and act on, helping reduce energy waste and support more sustainable building operations.
